Maloney's Stiff Elbow Aids Bucs In Opening Game
CINCINNATI, July 19 - At 4:30 yesterday afternoon, Red's Manager Dick Sisler carried a heavy baseball burden.  Three hours later he was the most relaxed man you'd want to see.  Most of Sisler's earlier troubles disappeared quickly as the Reds split a double-header with the Pirates before a crowd of 25, 647, and Jim Maloney's right elbow was all right and Joey Jay was on the road back.  Maloney was forced to leave the opener in the sixth inning complaining of stiffness and pain in his right elbow.  At the time he held a 5-2 lead but the Pirates bombed the Reds' bullpen for four runs in the eighth inning and walked off with 6-5 verdict.  Now the Reds had lost the first game and perhaps Maloney, Jay, who was pitching for the first time in three weeks because of arm trouble, was a question mark in the nightcap.  But Jay proved his arm was sound once more and although he had to have help in the late innings, he coasted to an 8-4 decision.  Sisler learned Maloney would be okay and he breathed easier.  "With Maloney ailing and Jay testing his arm, I spent a few uncomfortable hours," Sisler admitted. "You can't make a run for the pennant without pitching and if I lose one top man, we're hurting. "But now I'm satisfied."  Maloney said he noted some stiffness in the elbow and alerted the bench.  "I was having trouble with my hard curve," the big righthander explained. "Couldn't get it over and I kept trying.  That's why I had 3-2 on so many batters.  "I Threw either fast balls or slow curves but tried a sidearm curve to Bill Mazeroski in the sixth inning and almost hit him.  I threw a fast ball and even before the ball left my hand I felt a pain.  "The ball hit Maz on the helmet and I didn't think there was any use aggravating the injury.  But I applied some heat and now it feels good."  The reds got three runs in a hurry on Bob Friend in the third inning of the opener as Pete Rose slammed a two-run homer (No. 4) and Vada Pinson a solo job (No. 14), both in the right field seats.  Willie Stargell sent a Maloney high fastball over the centerfield fence with one aboard (No. 22) in the six inning and not long after, Maloney departed, John Tsitouris came in, retired the side but was bombed in the eighth inning.  In the meantime, John Edwards doubled home a run in the sixth and Frank Robinson dropped a triple down the right field line for another run in the seventh.  Three straight singles routed Tsitouris in the eighth.  Roger Craig got Maz on a foul pop but walked Gene Freese to load the bases and Roberto Clemente swatted a pinch double to right-center for two runs to tie the score.  Andre Rodgers added a single for the run that won.  Don Schwall flagged won the Reds in the final two innings and picked up the victory.  The Pirates didn't have a chance in the nightcap.  Rose doubled home a pair of runs off Joe Gibbon and Jim Coker doubled for a third run in the fourth inning.  The Reds added three more in the fifth inning on Pinson's infield tap and Tony Perez' two-bagger for two more and Pinson's two-run single off Wilbur Wood finished the job in the sixth.  Bob Bailey's fly voided the shutout in the sixth, Jim Pagliaroni singled for a seventh-inning run and Billy McCool came on to stem the Bucs in the eighth.  Bill Virdon doubled and Clemente singled when McCool took over from Jay.  He fanned Jerry Lynch, gave a double to Clendenon for a run and exchanged Maz's out for a second run.  The split pushed the Reds a game and a half in back of the league-leading Dodgers and put the Pirates within two and a half games of the Astros in eighth place.
