Gretzky assists Ranger win
New York takes 2,000th victory as Ottawa falls
The New York Rangers' latest victory was one for the record books, and not only because it was the milestone 2,000th in the history of the franchise.  Future Hall-of-Famer Wayne Gretzky also wrote his name into the Rangers' record book with four assists as New York beat Ottawa, 6-4, Saturday night in New York.  By assisting on four second period goals, Gretzky tied the Rangers' record for assists in one period set by Phil Goyette on December 20, 1963 against the Boston Bruins.  "When Wayne is out there behind the net he just makes things happen," said Gretzky's linemate Luc Robitaille, who scored two of the goals.  The other wing on the Gretzky line, Niklas Sundstrom, bagged the other two Gretzky-assisted goals.  For Gretzky, who now has 1,814 career assists, it was just anoter night at the office.  "We were concentrating on cycling down low and they're a good skating team," said Gretzky.  "We felt we had to dump the puck in and get them to create some turnovers along the boards.  We try to play down low as much as possible and in the second period we were able to do that."  All four Gretzky-assisted goals were scored from point blank range on Ottawa starting goaltender Damian Rhodes.  "Gretzky's a great player, he always has been," said Ottawa coach Jacques Martin.  "They have some good players on a good hockey team.  Whenever you have a one-two punch like Gretzky and (Mark) Messier, that's quite a combination."  Rangers goaltender Mike Richter extended his winning streak to a career-high 11 games and his unbeaten streak to 15 games (14-0-1) as the Rangers reached their milestone victory.  Since joining the NHL in the 1926-27 season, the Rangers have posted a 2,000-1,971-736 record.  The Rangers are fifth on the all-time victory list behind Montreal (2,594), Boston (2,295), Toronto (2,116) and Detroit (2,010).  Only Chicgo of the Original Six teams has less wins with 1,945.  Gretzky's precision centering pass from the left faceoff circle let to Robitaille's 17th goal of the season at 18:35 and capped a five-goal Rangers scoring outburst during the second period.  Messier gave the Rangers a 1-0 lead 1:28 into the period with his 23rd goal of the season.  Alexei Kovalev fed Messier for a 3-on-1 rush out of the Senator's zone.  Messier carried the puck all the way up the ice along the right boards, then switched to his backhand and put a bad-angle shot into the far corner of the net past Rhodes.
