For home plate umpire Steve Palermo, it wasn't a pretty sight. The Mariners and Swan won 3-0, but it wasn't easy. The Royals tied a club record by hitting four Seattle hitters. There were 17 walks, two wild pitches and three others by Codiroli that hit Palermo. "Palermo probably never was hit so many times in his life," Mariners manager Jim Lefebvre said. "Randy Johnson asked him what he would do if he was out there. Palermo said, "i'd be in the hospital." Swan, a Kennewick High School graduate, walked five but pitched 6-1/3 no-hit innings and combined with Bill Swift for a two-hitter and the Mariners scored three runs in the seventh inning for the victory. Codiroli, whose last major league starts came when he made two for Cleveland in 1988, hit three Mariners and walked eight in 4-2/3 innings. But he gave up only one hit and no runs. Swan, just recalled from a rehabilitation assignment at Calgary after being on the disabled list since July 8, lost his no-hitter with one out in the seventh when Bill Pecota grounded a first-pitch single to left. The rookie left-hander struck out five. "No, I wasn't thinking no-hitter at all," Swan said. "I struggled most of the night. I got tired in the third and fourth innings." Swan (2-2), who had a no-hitter through seven innings in his American League debut for Seattle, a 5-2 victory at Detroit on June 9, was on the disabled list because of tendinitis in his left bicep. Swift, who originally was scheduled to start Saturday night, replaced Swan at the start of the eighth and pitched two innings, allowing one hit, to earn his fourth save. Ken Griffey Jr., playing with his 40-year-old father, Ken Sr., for the second straight game, started the seventh-inning rally when he was hit in the right foot by a pitch from 6-foot-6, 240-pound Steve Crawford (5-4). Griffey Jr. stepped toward the mound and had to be restrained from going after Crawford by catcher Rey Palacios and Palermo. Griffey Jr. and Crawford exchanged words. "It was the most screwed-up game I've seen in a long time," Kansas City manager John Wathan said. "I don't know how Chris got out of it without any runs." After hitting Griffey Jr., Crawford walked Alvin Davis and Pete O'Brien beat out a bunt to load the bases. Jay Buhner singled to score Griffey and Davis scored on Scott Bradley's sacrifice fly. O'Brien scored from third on Jeff Schaefer's suicide squeeze. Codiroli, a one-time 14-game winner with Oakland, was released by Cleveland on Sept. 6, 1988, and was out of baseball until he signed with the Royals' Class AA team in Memphis on July 23.
