Sixty-eight games into their season, the Seattle Mariners reintroduced themselves to the American League West and kept the message simple: If no one wants to win this thing, we'll be happy to take it. By virtue of their seventh victory in eight games, a 13-2 licking laid upon the Texas Rangers, the Mariners reached .500 and found themselves closer to the division leaders than they had ever been this late in a season. Take a deep breath, folks, and look at the standings. The Seattle Mariners are just two games out of first place. Welcome to the pennant race. "I played with a lot of those guys my whole career, and believe me, that's not the same team I saw in spring training," ex-Mariner and current Ranger Mike Schooler said Sunday. "There's a different attitude over there. A different feel. That's a pretty good team." On a pretty good roll. A pair of home runs from Ken Griffey Jr. on Father's Day were the marquee shots in Seattle's 12-hit attack. But the Mariners put this thing on the assembly line early -- and everybody put a pied of this win together. "We're playing together. We all want to do something to contribute," Griffey Jr. said after hitting homers No. 14 and 15. "Guys coming off the bench stealing bases, getting hits. Everybody wants to be part of this. We're two games out, and nobody has taken control of this division. "We've got a shot, and all year long, that's what you play for. We can stay there." Jay Buhner waved a hand around the Seattle clubhouse and talked about the differences he sees in this club and the team that lost 98 games a year ago. "Lou has given this team a lot of freedom, and before the game, you hear a lot of loud music, see guys having fun," Buhner said. "But he's shown us how to get ready when it's time to get ready, and when we cross the foul lines, this team is ready to play. His attitude, his focus - we've got some leaders in this clubhouse - we've got a leader in Lou Piniella." Though it turned into a mid-June laugher, this game didn't have that feel early on. The Rangers jumped ahead 1-0 in the third inning behind seven-game winner Charlie Leibrandt. But Mike Felder walked and stole the first of three bases in the Seattle third. Greg Litton doubled him home to tie with two outs, and then Griffey Jr. went nuclear - a 435-foot home run into the third deck in right field. "I hit one on Mother's Day; I hit one on Father's Day," Griffey Jr. said, grinning. "It saves buying presents." An inning later, after Texas had closed to within a run at 3-2, the Mariners exploded for five runs, two coming on a two-run homer from rookie Bret Boone. From there, the Rangers couldn't do much with Tim Leary (5-3). And the Mariners tacked on insurance runs, including Griffey's second two-run home run in the bottom of the eighth. The league's leading All-Star vote getter this season, Griffey Jr. is now batting .316 with 15 home runs and 42 RBIs. Two of those homers have flown into the Kingdome's upper deck this year, and this was his third two-homer game of the year. For the homestand, during which the Mariners have won five of six games, Griffey Jr. is 12-for-22 with three home runs and six RBIs. "He just wants to win," said his father, Ken Griffey Sr. "He knows he can do most everything else." Piniella says it's still too early to look at Seattle's 34-34 record and declare this team a favorite. "I'm a little more reserved about that. But this team is focused. We're playing with confidence, and we're starting to sense we're good enough to play the way we've played the last week or so," Piniella said. "Sometimes in a pennant race, when nobody can close the door, you get a feeling. I think this team is starting to get that feeling." Welcome to the pennant race. Just up ahead sit the Kansas City Royals, Chicago White Sox and California Angels - three teams bunched within one game of one another. ULTRA RARE TICKET STUB IN EXCELLENT CONDITION!!!
