Griffey, Martinez spark M's
Seattle defeats Texas 5-2, Fassero picks up 13th victory
SEATTLE -- The best center fielder of the decade wandered Saturday - Ken Griffey Jr. playing in center, then left field, then right field, then first base.  And where will Junior play today, in the final game of the 1998 season?  "Anywhere he wants," said team president Chuck Armstrong.  And then he laughed.  Why not let Griffey have a little fun in a meaningless game against a mock Texas lineup, a game the Seattle Mariners won 5-2 in front of a Kingdome crowd of 33,147?  "Thank God we ran out of positions for him to play," manager Lou Piniella joked.  "I didn't run out of positions, I ran out of innings," Junior insisted.  Neither team took this one too seriously, and the finale today may draw even less interest - the Rangers will start rookie Jonathan Johnson, the Mariners will counter with Paul Spoljaric.  Seattle's Edgar Martinez culminated one of the great single-season comebacks in his career.  Batting .200 55 at-bats into the season, Martinez went 4 for 4 against the Rangers.  The single, two doubles and his 29th home run left him batting a season-best .321.  "With all that's happened this season, with the 56 home runs Junior has hit and the 40-40 club with Alex (Rodriguez), Edgar has been overlooked a bit," Piniella said. "But from where Edgar started, to get to .320 is as amazing as anything.  "He's done it in a season where he got 100 RBIs again.  He's done it in a season where he's matched his career high in home runs.  That's amazing, given how he started."  Martinez was almost shy talking about his statistics.  "How many at-bats can I get (today) before I go under. 320?" he asked, laughing. "That last at-bat, I was right at .320, so it was a question of what I wanted - to hit .320 or go for 30 home runs.  I went for 30."  And doubled to left field.  On a day when the Rangers started a reliever and used five pitchers in all, Jeff Fassero put the final touch on his season with a victory that pushed him above .500 (13-12).  "It's been a tough year for all of us, and it's nice to end it with a win," said Fassero.  Fassero went seven strong innings, then gave way to the surest one-two punch the Mariners bullpen has put together all year - Jose Paniagua and Mike Timlin.  Paniagua worked a 1-2-3 eighth innings.  Timlin faced four hitters in the ninth and earned his 19th save - 18th in 19 opportunities since the All-Star break.  "I'd like 20," Timlin said. "I like .320," Martinez said. "It sounds better than .319."  And Griffey, of course, wants to pitch. "I'm ready, I'm always ready," Griffey said.  But Piniella has limits. "Ahhh, no," the manager said when asked if Griffey might get an inning in.
