Lucas had plenty of help, including 18 points from Bill Walton, who had been sidelined for three weeks. Walton, professional basketball's Paul Bunyan, last saw game action in an exhibition contest Oct. 1. He had been sidelined with muscle spasms in his back after spending an entire day chopping firewood. But he came back in fine style against Seattle, cloggin the middle on defense and displaying a mid-season shooting touch. The Sonics jumped off to a 27-20 lead in the first period behind Bruce Seals' 12 points. But Portland crept back to within four at halftime. They caught Seattle early in the third period and then pulled away with their relentless fast break. Seals' 28 points led Seattle and Fred Brown had 18 for the Sonics. Sonics sunk by Portland SEATTLE -- The depth of personnel - or lack of it - that Sonics Coach Bob Hopkins has been lamenting surfaced again last night as Seattle dropped its National Basketball Association home season opener to Portland 106-99 at the Coliseum. It was not, as a crowd of 12, 156 probably anticipated. Mountain Man Bill Walton who was the real difference, but his sidekick Maurice Lucas and a couple guys off the Portland bench -- Lloyd Neal and Wally Walker. The Blazers opened defense of their NBA championship by wearing the Sonics down in the second half with fresh - and able - bodies. And they did it by flashing their blazing running game only occasionally. Lucas (24 points and 12 rebounds) delivered a superb game and Walton (18 points, 13 boards) did his part, to be sure. Walker (12 points) and Neal (13 tallies) contributed less in numbers, but were there at the opportune moments as the Blazers wiped out a find Seattle first half of play. Portland wiped out a four-point halftime deficit when Walker, reserve forward, came in to shovel in three hoops off the fast break. Still, the Sonics stayed close until Neal came on in the fourth chapter to can seven points, again the result of fast-breaking, and the Sonics played catch-up for the duration. Seattle, leading by as many as 13 in the first half, dug its own grave, Hopkins observed. "In the first half, our shot selection did not allow them to run." Hopkins said. "When we got the lead, all we had to do was be patient, not put up outside shots, but then we took about three bad shots and they converted every one of them. Then we still came back to make it a nip-and-tuck ballgame." Portland took the lead for good at 58-57 early in the third quarter, let the Sonics catch up at 62, then with Walker's help held on for a 74-72 edge entering the final period. But the Blazers went on a 15-6 tear to open the last period, led by three Neal field goals and a free throw, and zoomed up by 11 at 89-78. The Sonics, who showed several signs of promise, played it to the hilt. They drew within seven, 102-95 with 1:02 remaining, and later cut the gap to five, but it was too late. It negated several fine Sonic performances. Bruce Seals led scoring with 28, Fred Brown added 18 and Marv Webster, who played 28 minutes, played effectively at center despite a sore knee which has limited his activity the past two weeks.
