With 217, Ichiro passes A-Rod as M's single-season hits king
Ichiro Suzuki set the Seattle Mariners' single-season record for hits in typical fashion and added a home run in a 6-1 victory over the Baltimore Orioles.  Japan's Ichiro Suzuki is making the fans in Seattle forget about Alex Rodriguez.  With two hits, including his seventh home run, to increase his season total to 217, Suzuki replaced Rodriguez as the Seattle Mariners' single-season hits leader in a 6-1 victory over the Baltimore Orioles Saturday night.  "It's great, but I still have room to make myself better," Suzuki said through a translator.  Rodriguez, a four-time All-Star shortstop for Seattle, departed as a free agent to Texas this winter, signing a record $252 million contract. He had 215 hits with the Mariners in 1996.  The playoff-bound Mariners (102-40), winning for the sixth time in seven September games, cut their magic number for clinching the AL West to four.  Suzuki, a seven-time batting champion in Japan, went 2-for-4 and leads the AL with a .352 average.  He hit a 400-foot homer to right leading off the third inning against Rich Bauer (0-2), giving the Mariners a 2-0 lead. He also singled in the first inning and scored Seattle's first run.  Suzuki's 217 hits left him tied with Tony Oliva of Minnesota (1964) for the third-most by a rookie since 1900. Shoeless Joe Jackson of Cleveland had 233 hits in 1911, and Lloyd Waner of Pittsburgh had 223 in 1927.  His homer was his first since July 27 and it was his first extra base hit since Aug. 18, when he had a double in New York against the Yankees. He had a streak of 30 consecutive singles.  "When I hit it, I knew it was definitely out," Suzuki said.  In addition, Suzuki threw Tony Batista out at the plate when he tried to score from second on Jerry Hairston's single to right in the fifth for his team-leading seventh outfield assist. And he stole his team-leading 47th base.  After Suzuki's homer, the Mariners scored four more runs in the third to chase Bauer. Bret Boone hit a run-scoring double for his 126th RBI, and Mark McLemore had a sacrifice fly. David Bell and Dan Wilson added RBI singles.  McLemore's sacrifice fly in the third gave the Mariners a team-record 63 for the season. ... Mike Cameron stole his 30th base, making the Mariners the first AL team to have three players with 30 or more steals since the 1992 Chicago White Sox and the 1992 Milwaukee Brewers. McLemore has 34 SBs.
