"I haven't hit in four or five games," the Mariners center fielder said after testing his injured left knee and being cleared to play. "I just hope my bats are smart enough to remember what to do." They might be just 32-inch pieces of wood, but they are obviously from Ph.D. trees. Cameron had three hits, including the tie-breaking home run in the top of the ninth inning as the Mariners scratched out a 10-9 victory over the Rockies. "They were real smart," Cameron said after belting the most significant of the season-high six homers hit by Seattle. His came after the Rockies had staged a furious rally from a 9-4 deficit. The six homers tied a Coors Field record for a visiting team and was one shy of the Mariners' club record any time, anywhere. Colorado hit three homers of its own. What did you expect from the two highest-scoring teams in baseball, playing in a park built for offense? "This was a real sweet win," second baseman Bret Boone said. Boone hit two solo homers, but he also botched a gimme double-play grounder that fueled the Rockies' seventh-inning comeback. "We made a lot of mistakes. But it's nice to win a game when you make mistakes." The Mariners made as many uncharacteristic mistakes in this one as they have made all year. Bad base running. Poor pickoffs. Dropped double plays. And yet they survived to run their record to 49-13, the second-best record after 62 games in baseball history. The Mariners grabbed onto victory when Stan Javier jumped to get his glove above the left-field wall, taking away a home run from major-league RBIs leader Todd Helton. "That was the game right there," Javier said. "If that ball goes out, the game's over. They had all the momentum. I thought the ball might be out. But I thought I had a chance at it." The catch kept the Rockies off the scoreboard and set the stage for Cameron. "I wasn't going up there looking for a homer," Cameron said. "But I got a slider I could handle." That left it up to Kazuhiro Sasaki, who seemed oblivious to the pressure of pitching at Coors. He got two quick outs, gave up a single, then got the last out when Cameron tracked down Jacob Cruz's fly ball near the warning track in center. "It's a different game in this park, it really is," pitching coach Bryan Price said. "I don't know how their pitchers can ever get used to it. It's got to be similar to some of the old Kingdome games." The win went to rookie left-hander Brian Fuentes, who secured five of the most valuable outs of the game on Seattle's behalf. He entered the game in the seventh after Coors had made a mockery of some good pitching by relievers Arthur Rhodes and Jose Paniagua. The Mariners had a 9-8 lead at the time, and the Rockies had men on first and third. Fuentes gave up a run-scoring fly ball to pinch-hitter Terry Shumpert, but didn't give the Rockies anything else. He faced six batters, got five outs and issued only a one-out walk in the eighth that didn't hurt Seattle at all. "The thing that impressed me right away was the way Brian came after them," Price said. "He came into an intimidating situation against an intimidating lineup in an intimidating ballpark. And he didn't shy away one bit." "I'm going to call home, tell everybody about this," Fuentes said. "Then I'll go out and celebrate a bit. But not too much. I may have to pitch tomorrow." At Coors Field, that's almost a certainty. RARE SEASON TICKET STUB in EXCELLENT CONDITION!!! You get the ticket in the photos. Nice ticket stub (some light creasing) Displays Nicely!!!
