Greg Maddux pitches a Masterpiece, his best career game score ever.
Greg Maddux hurled a two-hit shutout on May 2, 2001. It was the 100th complete game of his career and his 32nd shutout. His 14 strikeouts were a career high. Maddux retired his last 13 batters, striking out six in a row at one point. He walked the game’s first hitter, Ron Belliard, but went to three balls on just two other hitters. Maddux threw 109 pitches and 79 strikes in a game that lasted just 2 hours, 7 minutes. Former # 1 Brave draft pick Tyler Houston struck out swinging for the Brewers' final out. Maddux had one of the Braves five hits – an infield single. At the end of the game, as Maddux walked from the field into the dugout, he flung the baseball into the stands behind home plate. Some jubilant fan got an unexpected souvenir. In May 2001, Maddux became the first Braves pitcher since 1916 to throw two 1–0 shutouts in the same month. This game was the 1st of two 1-0 shutouts in May. B.J. Surhoff's second inning home run accounted for the only run in the game.
