Chico's blast paved the way for a 7-6 victory over the fighting Los Angeles Dodgers before a cheering Crosley Field crowd of 25,785 and put the Reds back on top in the heated flag chase for the second time in 40 hours. The large crowd hiked the total for the three-game series to 73,665. In bagging the series, two games to one, the exciting Reds dropped the Dodgers back into second place by two percentage points - .573 to .571. Cardenas' six homer, by far his most important of the campaign, made a winner out of Joe Nuxhall for the fourth time in six decisions. The 37-year-old left hander became the third Cincinnati pitcher of the thrill-packed night in the seventh inning. There were few dull moments during the three-hour slugfest, which saw the two clubs explode 25 hits, including 15 by the Reds. Included in their bag of safeties were homers by little Chico, Frank Robinson and Deron Johnson. All-Star second baseman Pete Rose led the blistering attack off four Los Angeles hurlers, including the great Sandy Koufax, who failed to last five innings in quest of his 15th victory. But the defeat went to Bob Miller. It was the second for the veteran right-hander relief ace in three nights, dropping him back to the .500 mark with his fourth defeat.
