Dr. Robert Kerlan, orthopedic surgeon for the Los Angeles Lakers was an eyewitness last night when Chamberlain suffered the injury and after an examination ordered the big center to surgery today. Chamberlain was having one of his greatest evenings of the season. With 4:45 left in the third period, he had scored 33 points when he either took a bad step or tripped and went down below the basket with the injury to his right knee. It was the first major injury of Chamberlain's career. The Loss of Chamberlain so stunned the Lakers that they dropped a 122-120 decision to the Phoenix Suns on Stan McKenzie's last-second shot. The 7-fot-1 center, according to Laker coach Joe Mullaney, had been hit on the same knee earlier in the game and had it treated during a timeout. Mullaney was not as optimistic as Dr. Kerlan and said, "I would think he will be out for the year." The injury was to the bottom of the right knee and was similar to an injury suffered two years ago by Elgin Baylor who made a comeback. "After all, Chamberlain is 33 and he doesn't heal like a 19-year-old," Mullaney said. The Lakers' coach said he probably would alternate Rick Robertson and 7-foot Mel Counts at center as replacements for Chamberlain and said he had confidence in them both. Chamberlain started the current season with 27,098 points as the leading shotmaker in NBA history. With his 33 points Friday night, Wilt now has 27,388 career points. He came to the Lakers prior to the 1968-69 season from the 76ers and this was his 10th year in the NBA. Chamberlain, a Philadelphia native, had been voted the league's Most Valuable Player four times and among his other achievements was scoring 100 points in a game to set the league record. This season Mullaney had Chamberlain shooting more than he did last year and the big center was averaging 32.1 points a game, second only to teammate Jerry West with a 32.3 average in the latest league statistics. The Suns beat the Lakers for the first time in seven tries. Ex-Laker Gail Goodrich led the Suns with 37 points and Connie Hawkins added 21. ULTRA RARE FULL TICKET IN AMAZING CONDITION!!!
