Lidstrom scored his second goal 47 seconds into overtime to give Detroit a 5-4 victory over Chicago, two days after it was announced that the defenseman received the most All-Star votes for the second consecutive year. "It was somewhat surprising, especially looking at Mario Lemieux and some other players in the voting," Lidstrom said. "It's really nice to get that recognition." The defending Stanley Cup champions beat Chicago at home for the first time in 10 meetings. Chicago's last defeat in Detroit was April 2, 1999. Lidstrom can no longer be regarded as an underrated player -- as he was for years in Detroit -- even though he wasn't mentioned until the fourth paragraph of the NHL's news release Saturday. He has won the Norris Trophy as the NHL's top defensemen the past two years, and won the Conn Smythe Trophy last season as the MVP of the playoffs. "Now they recognize him and that's a good thing," Detroit coach Dave Lewis said. "He's been playing like that for the five, six, seven years." Brendan Shanahan and Sergei Fedorov assisted on the game-winning goal, which started with a three-on-two rush and ended with Lidstrom scoring on a rebound off Shanahan's shot. "I saw Shanahan at the side, and I've got to respect that shooter," said Michael Leighton, who gave Jocelyn Thibault a rest, and made 28 saves. "I made the save, and fell over. I was just about to jump on the puck and (Lidstrom) chipped it over my pad." There were four ties after a scoreless first period. "That was too wild for me," Lewis said. "As a team, we were too porous and we lost a lot of battles. But we found a way to win." Chicago's Phil Housley scored with 3:19 left in regulation to force overtime. Kyle Calder corralled the puck behind the net and assisted on the game-tying goal. Calder scored twice. Brett Hull's sixth goal in five games gave Detroit a 4-3 lead with 8:37 left in the third. Hull's 19th goal this season and the 698th of his career came when he directed a shot from off Housley's backside just in front of the net. Hull, who has 19 goals this season, needs two more to become the sixth player in NHL history with 700 goals. Curtis Joseph made 34 saves for the Red Wings. Detroit's Luc Robitaille snapped a career-long scoreless streak at 12 games with an assist on Lidstrom's first goal, which gave Detroit a 2-1 lead midway through the second period. Chicago's Theo Fleury was ejected from the game after a spearing penalty was called against him in the final seconds of the second period. Game notes -- Steve Yzerman will join the Detroit Red Wings during their upcoming road trip for the first time this season to begin a regular practice routine. Yzerman, who had surgery on his right knee in August, has not played since helping Detroit win the Stanley Cup in June. ... Fedorov had three assists. ... Detroit was 0-6-3 in its previous nine games at home against the Blackhawks. ULTRA RARE TICKET STUB in GREAT CONDITION!!! You get the ticket in the photos.
