M's take advantage of Royal miscues to win again
SEATTLE (AP) -- The Kansas City Royals, last year's world champions, have achieved their recent success through flawless execution and doing all the little things right.  They did all the little things wrong Friday night in falling to the Seattle Mariners, 6-5.  "Anything can happen when you're playing on turf," said Kansas City Manger Mike Ferraro, "and tonight it all did.  We are now 0-7 indoors for the season.  I don't like it."  The final blow to Kansas City's hopes occurred with a tie game in the bottom of the ninth.  With the bases loaded and one out, Dave Hengel hit a routine ground ball to shortstop.  The shortstop relayed to Gold Glove second baseman Frank White for the forceout, but White could not convert a game-saving double play.  "We didn't go for the play at the plate," Ferraro said.  "I'd rather for for the double play, but the runner was right on top of him.  He couldn't make a good throw."  The Mariners were also assisted on a pair of passed balls by Gold Glove catcher Jim Sundberg.  The first miscue came in the second inning with a base runner on first and one out.  Danny Tartabull doubled that runner home for the Mariners' first tally.  In the sixth inning, with the score 2-1 in the Royals' favor, Sundberg allowed another passed ball with runners on first and second.  They both advanced and Tartabull knocked them both in with another double.  The Royals are 7-17 against Seattle in their last 23 matchups.  "There's no explaining it," Seattle Manager Dick Williams said.  "Other teams can beat our brains out the way we can beat the Royals.  Right now I'm just concerned about improving our record this year.  We just need to have some luck like this against other teams."  Rookie Hengel knocked in the winning run with one out in the ninth inning on his fielder's choice groundout.  Hengel's blow came off reliever Dan Quisenberry and made a winner of Matt Young, 8-6.  Bud Black, 5-9, was the loser.  The Royals had tied up the game with a pair of runs in the ninth offr Young.  With one out, Willie Wilson and Frank White both singled.  One out later, Greg Pryor doubled home two runs.  Tartabull's second RBI of the game, a double in the sixth inning had put the Mariners ahead 4-2.
