The Oakland Athletics' manager, in a pre-series comment that raised the fans'ire, said, "It's going to take a great series from the Yankees to have a shot to beat us." If great isn't good enough, with two more like last night, there won't be a fourth straight World Series title. Mark Mulder outpitched Roger Clemens, who left after four innings with a tight hamstring, in a matchup of Cy Young candidates, and powered by two homers from Terrence Long and one from Jason Giambi, Oakland beat the Yankees 5-3 at the Stadium in Game 1 of the best-of-five AL Division Series. The Yankees flew all night to win at Oakland in Game 5 last year, but this season is different, with the Athletics having baseball's second-best record. "They are impressive," Torre said. "They were good last year and they are better this year, and last year we held on by the skin of our teeth." The Yankees will try to pull even tonight with Andy Pettitte going against Tim Hudson before the series shifts to Oakland on Saturday. Should Pettitte lose, then the seriousness of Clemens' tight right hamstring could be irrelevant. Clemens left after walking Giambi to open the fifth, but showed signs of struggle long before. Clemens' injury isn't the only sign of concern. The offense sputtered against Mulder, managing Chuck Knoblauch's fifth-inning RBI single before Tino Martinez's two-run homer in the eighth off reliever Jim Mecir. Conversely, Oakland's hitters, sensing Clemens was struggling, milked the count and made him work. Clemens threw 82 pitches in four innings, giving up two runs on four hits and three walks with one hit batter and one strikeout. It could have been worse for Clemens had he not helped himself defensively in the second and third innings. The Athletics came out aggressively and took a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Johnny Damon singled to left, stole second, went to third on a groundout and scored on Giambi's sacrifice fly. The Yankee's response indicated this wouldn't be their night. Knoblauch reached on second baseman Frank Menechino's error and Derek Jeter singled, but a potential big inning fizzled when Bernie Williams grounded into a double play and Martinez struck out. Clemens says a pitcher must work his way out of two or three jams during the course of a game if he's to win. Clemens escaped serious trouble in the second after Oakland loaded the bases. Jeremy Giambi led off with a double, Ramon Hernandez was hit by a pitch and Damon walked with two out, but Clemens stabbed Miguel Tejada's hot one-hopper headed for center to end the inning. The second jam came in the third when Jason Giambi reached on Knoblauch's two-base error - the ball went off the left fielder's glove as he leaped to make a catch against the wall - and took third on Dye's grounder. However, Clemens helped himself with another good defensive play, spearing Eric Chavez's wicked liner on the short hop, and Jeremy Giambi's grounder to second. Long's line-drive homer to right leading off the fourth -- off a 1-and-2 pitch, an indication Clemens was off - increased Oakland's lead to 2-0. Jason Giambi's homer off the facing of the upper deck in the seventh, and Long's homer in the eighth - both off Sterling Hitchcock - increased Oakland's lead to 4-1. Tejada's sacrifice fly in the eighth made it 5-1. Torre always said a certain element of luck is needed to win, and part of that luck is getting the calls. It's an oversimplification to suggest the outcome would have been different if calls in the third and fifth innings went the Yankees' way. Alfonso Soriano was called out trying to steal third in the third - Jeter singled two batters later - and David Justice was called out for running inside the baseline to lead off the fifth. However, replays indicated both calls were correct. Although Torre said the Athletics are the best team they have faced in the playoffs during the Yankees' run, he's confident. "The thing that makes me feel confident is the fact that we've managed to, especially in the second half, play well in every series we needed to play well in." This time, playing "well" might not be good enough. ULTRA RARE TICKET STUB in EXCELLENT CONDITION!!! You get the ticket in the photos. Minor crease top left, Displays nicely!!!
