Seattle's woeful season ends with a loss
SEATTLE -- Johnny Oates is trying to be realistic about facing the New York Yankee's powerhouse.  "Our momentum is only as good as Todd Stottlemyre pitches Tuesday night," the Texas Rangers manager said after his AL West champs tuned up for the playoffs with a 12-6 victory over the Seattle Mariners on Sunday.  Rusty Greer, Roberto Kelly, Milt Cuyler and Lee Stevens hit home runs for the Rangers, who finished the season with a franchise-record 940 runs.  Texas will need all the power it can get if its going to have a chance against the Yankees, who were 8-3 against the Rangers this season.  "You look at what they've done over the course of a 162-game season," Oates said. "The only thing more amazing is what Mark McGwire and Sammy Sosa have done."  Greer had a two-run homer off Paul Spoljaric (4-6) in the third inning and Kelly connected for a three-run shot in the fourth to give Texas an 8-2 lead.  Ken Griffey Jr. made an outstanding try to catch Greer's home run, leaping over the 8-1/2 foot center-field fence to get his glove on the ball.  But it went off his glove over the fence.  Greer stopped at second base because he didn't know if Griffey had caught the ball.  "He can do a lot of things," Greer said of Griffey, smiling. "I couldn't tell if he had it."  Cuyler had a three-run homer in the seventh and Stevens followed with a 466-foot shot, the longest in the Kingdome this season, to put the Rangers ahead 12-4.  The Rangers, who clinched their division Friday night, will meet the New York Yankees in Yankee Stadium in the opener of a best-of-5 series.  Stottlemyre will face David Wells.  Tony Fossas (1-3) got the victory with 1-1/3 innings of scoreless relief.  Fossas, 41, found out before the game that he had made the Rangers' postseason roster.  He was released by the Mariners and the Chicago Cubs this season.  "It's nice to come back to Seattle and show people I'm not done, I'm no washed up," said Fossas, who pitched in Seattle's opening night 10-9 loss to Cleveland. "So this had been a great day."  Griffey, who led the AL with 56 home runs for the second straight season, and All-Star shortstop Alex Rodriguez each played in their 162nd game of the year for the Mariners.  They were taken out in the top of the third.  Griffey's locker was cleaned out and he was gone after the game.  But before the game, he said he was deeply disappointed by the Mariners' performance this season.  "I did everything I could to help the team this year," he said. "Any time you go home and your sport is still playing, it's disappointing."
