The next bat he used proved to be much more effective. Sexson doubled home Adrian Beltre in the bottom of the ninth to give the Seattle Mariners a 6-5 come-from-behind win over the Tampa Bay Devil Rays on Sunday. Beltre singled off Chad Orvella with one out for his 1,000th career hit, then Sexson drilled the first pitch he saw off the base of the left-field wall. "I got a pretty good pitch to hit," Sexson said. "I put a good swing on it and hit it off the end of the bat. I wasn't sure if he was going to catch it. Fortunately, it got over his head." The combination of Beltre and Sexson, who joined the team as free agents in the offseason, was supposed to be a huge boost in the middle of the Mariners' lineup. Sexson has impressive power numbers with 13 homers and 43 RBI, but is hitting only .246. Beltre has been worse, hitting .238 with five homers and 28 RBI. "Richie has been pretty much coming through all year," Beltre said. "He's been driving in runs, hitting a lot of home runs. I'm the one who's been struggling. I need to pick it up more." Both had two hits on Sunday, helping the Mariners win for the fifth time in seven games. Bret Boone went 2-for-4 with two RBI and Randy Winn had four hits for Seattle, including an RBI double in the sixth to put the Mariners ahead 5-4. Ron Villone (2-2) pitched a scoreless ninth to earn the win. Orvella (0-1), who grew up about a half-hour from Safeco Field in Sammamish, allowed two hits and one run in one-third of an inning. It was the third appearance of his career. "I thought I made a decent pitch, but I probably should have started with something offspeed," Orvella said. "I threw a fastball. He hit it well, game over." The Devil Rays' record on the road dipped to 4-23. The team has lost every series away from home this season. Tampa Bay tied it at 5 in the top of the eighth. Aubrey Huff led off with a single against Mariners reliever Julio Mateo, pinch-hitter Alex Sanchez singled off Jeff Nelson, and Damon Hollins grounded out to drive home Huff. Seattle trailed 4-0 after two innings, but rallied with one in the third and three in the fifth to tie it. In the sixth, Mike Morse hit a bloop single off Tampa Bay starter Hideo Nomo just inside the right-field foul line. He advanced to second on a sacrifice by Pat Borders, and scored when Winn doubled into the right-center gap for a 5-4 Mariners lead. Nomo allowed 11 hits and five earned runs over six innings. He walked one and struck out three. Seattle starter Jamie Moyer threw 124 pitches through six innings. He allowed seven hits and four runs -- three earned -- while walking one and striking out a season-high six. After allowing three runs in the second, the 42-year-old lefty settled down and retired 13 of his last 14 batters. In the first, Tampa Bay's Carl Crawford led off with a single and scored on Julio Lugo's double into the left-center gap. Shoddy defense added to Moyer's struggles in the second. With two outs, Alex Gonzalez singled and scored on Crawford's RBI double. Lugo then hit an infield single, but a throwing error by shortstop Morse allowed Crawford to score. Josh Phelps then singled to right, but Ichiro Suzuki was charged with an error when his errant throw to third got past Beltre, allowing Lugo to score for a 4-0 lead. The Mariners started their comeback in the third. Beltre hit a bases-loaded single with one out, but Nomo got out of the jam when Sexson struck out and Raul Ibanez flew out to shallow right. That was when Sexson decided to give his bat a beating. Mariners manager Mike Hargrove didn't mind seeing Sexson boil over. "He was upset," Hargrove said. "At least he cares, and he showed why he's the player that he is. He refocused and took care of business. It was good to see." The Mariners tied it up in the fifth with four hits and three runs. Sexson drove home Suzuki with an RBI single, and Boone's double scored Beltre and Sexson. Game notes -- Tampa Bay's last road series win was Oct. 1-3, 2004, at Detroit. ... The Devil Rays' first four batters -- Crawford, Lugo, Huff and Phelps -- entered the game with a combined .476 average against Moyer. In the game, they were 5-for-12. ... Suzuki snapped an 0-for-8 slump with a fifth-inning single. ... Suzuki's throwing error in the second was his first since Aug. 26, 2004, against Kansas City. It was the 10th error of his MLB career.
