Junior impresses even N.Y. fans
Two homers highlight return
NEW YORK -- The just-off-Broadway debut of Ken Griffey Jr. in the postseason was a smash Tuesday, nearly as solid a hit as the three he produced against the New York Yankees.  All his life, Griffey had dreamed of October magic.  Once the Seattle Mariners reached the American League Division Series, he responded with the stuff that pads legends.  Griffey hit two long home runs - one off the third-deck facade in Yankee Stadium - and a single in the ninth inning to continue a rally that fell short.  Seattle lost to New York, 9-6.  Junior won a few more fans.  One of them was Reggie Jackson, a Hall of Fame player who has followed Griffey since The Kid broke in back in '89.  Has Jackson ever seen a better player? "No," he said, "and I saw Willie Mays." "If you're talking talent, there's nobody better, there's nobody as good," New York's Paul O'Neill said. "And there may not be anybody close."  Coming off the worst season of his career, when he missed 73 games with a shattered left wrist, Griffey finished the '95 campaign batting .258 with 17 home runs and 48 RBI.  The playoffs? That might be something entirely different.  "I listen to the veterans, and they say not to change anything you do," Griffey said. "They said just to have fun, so that's what we're trying to do.  Tonight we had a little fun, for awhile.  Then they got away in the seventh and it wasn't much fun, any more."  Playing in front of a full-house Yankee Stadium crowd of 57,178, Griffey was in his element - and in the ball park where he spent much of his youth, when his father played for New York.  Junior used to play in the tunnels beneath the stands during the games Senior would play.  Now that he's on the field, Griffey plays only to win.  A year ago, he admitted to thinking about leaving Seattle if the team couldn't win.  All he ever wanted in baseball, he said, was a World Series ring.  This season, largely without him, the team stayed competitive - and with him back in the lineup, won the American League West title.  "The home runs tonight, that's just part of my job," Griffey said. "these guys got here by playing great ball all year, by coming back and winning games that we'd have lost in other years.  "Tonight, we're playing in front of a crowd that wanted us to lose.  Jay (Buhner) got hit with a big tomato in right field, and you heard what they were screaming out there?  It wasn't personal, that's just New York."  It was also unprintable, a three-word chant from the outfield seats that ended with "..you, Buhner."  "I was a little nervous tonight, but after the first pitch, it was just a ball game," Griffey said.  Just a nationally televised playoff game against New York's David Cone.  In three at-bats vs. Cone, Griffey hit two home runs and flied out.  In the ninth inning, against John Wetteland, Griffey singled.  "He's close to being himself again, and there aren't many like him," manager Lou Piniella said, "Nothing fazes Junior."  Not quite true.  After Buhner was hit in right field by a tomato, and second baseman Joey Cora just missed being conked by a golf ball, Griffey decided to move in the outfield.  "You saw me playing left center tonight, didn't you?" he asked, laughing. "That's because nobody had the arm to hit me with anything if I was in left center field.  Jay was getting buried - and I didn't want any part of that."  Were the fans trying to hurt Buhner, Griffey was asked.  "Nah, this is just New York," Griffey said. "You ought to see what they do if they don't like you."
