Quarterback Completes 32 of 46 While DeBerg Is Intercepted 7 Times in 31-7 Romp
TAMPA, Fla. (AP) -- Ronnie Lott said there was no easy way to explain the San Francisco 49ers seven interceptions of Tampa Bay quarterback Steve DeBerg, but he tried his best, starting with the axiom that a team's pass coverage is only as good as its pass rush.  "I know it's tough on him having to take the heat, but it's tough to play with the kind of pressure we put on him and he had to throw right away," Lott said Sunday.  "When you put pressure on him you can almost anticipate him throwing to a certain spot."  More often than not, those spots were occupied by 49ers when the ball arrived, and San Francisco rolled to a 31-7 season opening victory before a crowd of 50,780 at Tampa Stadium.  "It's not really how well you cover, it's how well you recover from things happening on the field," said Lott, who had two interceptions.  "Our guys were rushing well and we had tight coverage on the corners and so we got to the ball."  The remaining interceptions were spread equally among rookie cornerbacks Don Griffin and Tim McKyer, linebackers Jim Fahnhorst and Tom Cousineau and safety Jeff Fuller.  The National Football League record for interceptions thrown by a quarterback in a game is eight, set by Jim Hardy of the Chicago Cardinals against Philadelphia in 1950.  The seven thefts by the 49ers were a team record.  The previous record for an individual Buc quarterback was five by Doug Willams against San Francisco in 1979.  The Bucs threw six as a team at Chicago in 1984.  "No way, no how did anybody expect what happened to us out there happen," said Bucs Coach Leeman Bennett.  "Any time you throw seven interceptions, you are lucky not to get beat by 50 points.... It looked a lot like a preseason game.  I'm very disappointed and very displeased."  DeBerg, who was sacked three times by 49ers defensive end Jeff Stover and pressured by nose tackle Michael Carter all afternoon, offered no excuses.  "I lost the game... I just have to take responsibility," said DeBerg, who played for San Francisco from 1978-80.  "Hopefully I can regroup and the team can regroup.  This is probably the worst game I've ever had.  Unfortunately it came against my old team," he added. "They are a good team, but I made it easy for them.  I just didn't throw the ball well.  That's the bottom line."  San Francisco Coach Bill Walsh welcomed the outstanding play of his defense as much as the return of quarterback Joe Montana, who missed three weeks of the preseason with a sprained right ankle.  Montana didn't show any effects of the injury and completed 32-of-46 passes for 356 yards, including a 4-yard scoring toss to Mike Wilson in the first quarter.  The 49ers, who led 14-0 at halftime, also scored on a pair of 1-yard runs by Roger Craig, Jeff Kemp's 10-yard TD pass to John Frank and Ray Wersching's 30-yard field goal.  The seven interceptions, meanwhile, were a 49ers team record and provided a little relief for Walsh who went into the season opener with concerns about starting two rookies in his secondary.  "I was very pleased with the outcome, although I think the game was tougher than the score would indicate," Walsh said.  "It was good to prove our ability to get into the end zone.  It was an excellent effort, up to our highest expectations."  Tampa Bay, 2-14 a year ago and losers of 39 of its last 49 games, averted a shutout when DeBerg, who finished with 18 completions in 40 attempts for 210 yards, threw a 31-yard scoring pass to Gerald Carter early in the third quarter.
